Typography

For the love of Type!

I discovered my love for typography during my college years, where I was captivated by the art and precision involved in type design. This passion has led to the publication of two significant works in the field of typography.

The first is a 16-page type specimen celebrating the Bodoni typeface, featuring an excerpt from Don Quixote. The second is a 150-page tribute book created for a gala fundraiser at Congregation Beth El.

These projects have allowed me to express my creativity and dedication to the craft, and I'm proud to have my work published and appreciated, as well as create memorable keepsakes for clients.

Bodoni & Quixote

Type Specimen Book

Bodoni is a serif typeface created by Giambattista Bodoni in 1798, under the patronage of the Duke of Parma. Influenced by John Baskerville and French type founders Firmin Didot and Pierre Simon Fournier, Bodoni's typeface features a more vertical axis and extreme stroke contrast, distinguishing it as the first modern typeface. Bodoni also designed decorative ornaments for text separation and graphical accents. Celebrated for its elegance, Bodoni is used by brands like Zara and Calvin Klein, and was featured on Nirvana's "Bleach" album.

Don Quixote, considered the first modern novel, was written in 1605 by Miguel de Cervantes. This groundbreaking work, depicting the adventures of Alonso Quijano, influenced literature profoundly with its realistic portrayal of everyday life and accessible language. Combining Bodoni and Don Quixote in a type specimen book highlights their shared significance as pioneering works in typography and literature.

L'Chaim Book of Life

Tribute Book

I completed a 150-page tribute book in a mere five days to honor Rabbi Avi's 20 years of dedicated service to the San Diego Jewish community. This book celebrated his impactful leadership and contributions while also serving as a fundraising tool for vital community initiatives.

Using Bodoni and Futura typefaces, I employed creative axis layouts to transform the spreads and tributes into vibrant, unique, and one-of-a-kind presentations, avoiding redundancy and boredom. The proceeds supported various educational programs and social action projects, reinforcing the community's commitment to learning and social justice.

This project underscored my ability to blend typography and graphic design with meaningful content to support and enhance community efforts efficiently and effectively.

Membership Packet

Marketing Campaign

I spearheaded a marketing campaign for membership renewal and churn retention titled "Welcome Home" for Congregation Beth El. As part of this campaign, I designed a complex pochette folder that encapsulated the feeling of being "at home" with a welcoming, inclusive, and unique synagogue family.

The 9x11 inch folder utilized axis techniques and a simple Futura font to keep the packet engaging while visually conveying the message that Congregation Beth El is both modern and inclusive. It maintained a balance of traditional values and rituals, reflecting the congregation's commitment to serving the San Diego Jewish Community with joy.

This wildly successful campaign not only aimed to renew memberships but also to strengthen the community's connection to the synagogue, emphasizing its role as a joyful and inclusive home for all.
